Mdecins Sans Frontires (MSF) is an independent, medical, emergency relief organisation that provides assistance to people worldwide, regardless of their background, religion or political convictions. Above all, we aim to save lives and to offer medical care to victims of disasters, wars and epidemics. Working together with local staff, we give direct support to the population. MSF also appeals to those in power, including governments and international organizations, and speaks out about the abuses we encounter in the course of our work.

MSF coordinates operations through collaborations between global offices. Artsen zonder Grenzen Nederland (MSF-Holland) has a partnership with offices in the UK and Germany. This partnership, known as MSF Operational Centre Amsterdam (MSF-OCA), operates medical humanitarian interventions in about 28 countries. Annually, MSF-OCA deploys approximately 1,100 international staff and employs 7,000 national staff.

The office of MSF-Holland located in Amsterdam hosts more than 250 employees, offering direct support to MSF-OCA operations.


Our Logistics department offers a suite of technical and supply chain services including end-to-end supply chain management, medical facility management and maintenance support to all medical equipment, as well as expert advice on construction, transport, energy and other technical domains. Some 800 logisticians who work in our field projects receive logistical support from our support teams, based in offices in Amsterdam and Berlin.

Biomed and cold chain advisor 100%
(internal title: advisor field support back office)

Based in Amsterdam

PLACE IN THE ORGANIZATION:

The position reports to Coordinator of Technical Logistics of the field support unit (FSU) and closely collaborates with the other advisors in the Logistic department (e.g. Operational Logistics, Facilities Management Advisor, Energy advisor, Medical device specialist, Tactical Procurement Officers) and some advisors of the Public Health Department (e.g. Lab Advisors)

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

You provide expert advice and support to operations and colleagues in the field on the technical and management aspects of biomedical and cold chain equipment/devices used in the field projects (e.g. patient monitoring, surgical tools, oxygen concentrators, ice line fridges, cold chain temperature monitoring);

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

You promote a vision in the field of your expertise (biomed and cold chain) and initiate. You develop and maintain an integral and coherent policy in the field of expertise and develop procedures, guidelines, protocols, tools etc. to support it;

You provide support with regards to the technical management of biomedical and cold chain equipment in the field (troubleshooting, installation and (de)commissioning);

You create (and follow-up on) the planning and training for a team of 2 technical flying staff, whose role is to support the implementation of the guidance and good practice of the management of biomedical equipment in the field projects of the organization.

You maintain and improve the knowledge base available to the field staff and animates/moderate the community of practice, composed of biomedical technicians working in the field;

You lead small size back office projects;

You assist HRM in the maintenance of the pool of specialised logistic staff (related to biomed and cold chain);

You are available for (short) field deployment on technical and/or emergency assignments.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

You are a biomedical, electrical, electronic or mechanical engineer. You have experience in the technical management of biomedical equipment and you have the analytical capacity to do trouble shooting over skype and phone as well. You can work independently but you are also very much used to working with an extended team of people, who are not always in the same location as you are. You have previous overseas work experience in humanitarian assistance (work experience with MSF in the field is a strong asset). In this capacity you ideally have done mass vaccination activities (cold chain management). You have a service orientation and excellent communication skills in English and preferably also French. Results and quality orientation comes natural to you and you are also used to working on this with a team. You are flexible and ready to spend about 30% of your time in the field
(there will be a particular need in Uzbekistan project due to an ongoing clinical trial).

WE OFFER

A challenging and exciting position in an international environment

A contract for 15 June 2020 to 14 August 2021 based on a fulltime appointment (40 hours/week).

A gross monthly salary between € 2875,- and € 4106,- depending on professional experience, based on a fulltime appointment

Other benefits include 30 holidays based on a fulltime appointment and a premium-free pension plan
